In Spring 2017, Munich's Salon Pitzelberg re-opened its basement bar. The building, a historical landmark, is located on Munich's famous Gärtnerplatz. NOVONO's renovation of the theatre's basement bar, was precisely and delicately executed, 'The space was filled with memories of actors drinking to their thespian successes, mourning their defeats, and in both cases playing the piano,' explains NOVONO founder, Nora von Nordenskjöld. Music and theatre are the conceptual inspiration for the space, which required a clever layout solution in order to allow for many different functions. The dance floor floats above the subwoofers, creating the perfect setting for its dancing-inclined guests.

In Spring 2017, BRLO opened its outdoor biergarten. The space brought BRLO's edgy, black-and-white interior outdoors into the industrial Gleisdreick park. NOVONO successfully partnered with BRLO's hop-farmers in order to create a landscaping concept which made the hops the star of the space. The fragrant plants form a canopy above the seating area where black furniture with white edges provide ample space for guests to enjoy their beer in the shade.

our CONCEPT:  BRLO goes outdoors. BEERGARDENs are one of the first things that come to mind when we think about Germany. But the BRLO BIERGARTEN is an example of this cliche meeting craft; the concept is similar to BRLO's indoors; black and white, patterned and symmetrical, but we added a GREEN ROOF!

In spring 2017, Mau Loa, located in the Mitte district of Berlin opened its doors. The 48 sqm Poke restaurant, which caters to Mitte's trendy business clientele as well as tourists and locals, is the smallest restaurants designed by Nora von Nordenskjoeld of NOVONO.

The space is clad in a pink-toned graphic collage, with reclaimed wood paneling, and a mosaic mirrored wall. A semi-open shelving partition filled with plants separates the dining area from the counter and entryway.

MA' LOA's playful nature shines through with features such as menus which are displayed on surf board panels, and two swings taking the place of seating in the shop's windows.

In 2015, The Visit opened in Berlin's popular Kreuzberg neighbourhood. The space uses geometric patterns in texture, lighting, and spatial design.

The space, which is one of NOVONO's more minimal designs, is mainly black and white with touches of wood, allowing the quality brewed coffee to be the star.

The reflective black resin flooring and linear ceiling lighting make the space feel taller than it is, creating a sense of space. The metal tracks which create a vertical grid throughout the space function as architectural anchors, on which shelving and other horizontal pieces can stand.

Steel plates, metal mesh and wood. Black and white. As simple as the components seem – the same is true for beer – combined they are much more and a surprise. The space gives you the feeling of knowing the Brwhouse intuitively, it feels like meeting in a place that has always been there and will be – simply your favorite pub.

Accentuated light combined with naturally aged wood creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere in BRLO’s recently opened Brwhouse in the middle of Berlin. The design is aligned in perfect symmetry along two axes – from the kitchen area to the brewery through the length of the building and from the main entrance to the entrance of the beer garden in the width. Built out of oversea containers, Berlin’s new craft beer hotspot reveals to its guest not only a view into the open kitchen where kitchen Chef Ben Pommer performs his magic, but also a view to the brewing coppers, the heart of the building and the craft of brewing.

The custom made tables out of 7 centimeter thick aged wood with the rough metal structures will age over time and develop a patina, a reminder of the time spent here by guests enjoying food and beer.

Downstairs in the middle of the crowd one admires the height of the ceiling and enjoys the comfort of the central elevated seating area that can also be used as a stage. Around this central restaurant element, the seemingly empty area was created on purpose to give enough space to the standing crowds at night to enjoy their beer at the high tables.

From the gallery the busy space can be overlooked offering a more tranquil experience. Being part of the process of building and constructing the BRLO Brwhouse from the beginning – the architecture is by Graft – working with the great team of BRLO not only made the project very special, but converted the whole NOVONO team to beer drinkers due to the tasty creations by BRLO. That was definitely a first!

Currently NOVONO is designing and building the new beer garden (have a look at 2016’s pop up beer garden on the construction site, also designed by NOVONO) opening soon for guests to enjoy a cold BRLO in the sun.

In its central location in Hamburg buzzing with life at all times small and cozy Bearclaw offers a selection of comfort food with pulled meat to stay or for take away. Supporting the young entrepreneur from the very beginning through the conceptual and designing process of the idea and site, this small oasis feels like coming home.

The open kitchen allows guests to watch the chefs preparing the food, while visually connecting the two spaces, creating the feeling of a wider area. Feature piece is the long custom made wooden table that seems to be cutting directly through the window. The clear colors – black, white and green – and materials – aged wood, tiles, mesh and copper – are similar to the style of a New York Deli, yet in a modern, clean and refreshed look.

The way of preparation of the meat – pulling with a bearclaw like instrument – a very rough method – is reflected in the strict metal grid on the walls and the white seams of the tiles.

In 2012 Munich’s Cafe Reitschule appointed NOVONO to redecorate and furnish the former restaurant of Munich’s horseback-riding school with a fresh look.  A Königinnenstrasse hallmark since 1927, this location has been host to various gastronomical concepts.

The T-shaped layout’s warmly coloured interior is complete with pendant lights hung on the moulded ceilings, contrast wall-moulding, and custom geometric rugs with equestrian detailing.

A curved recessed ceiling with built in lighting draws the focus to the centre of the room where eclectic vintage furniture and a fireplace are framed by statuesque lamps which toy with the space’s scale, giving it a snug feel.  Intimate booths off of the main room offer patrons an option for a more private dining experience whilst actually watching horses.

Found objects used throughout the decor mirror the cuisine’s locavore model and acknowledge its rich history, as do the framed equestrian prints which are proudly hung on the walls as a bow to the venue’s riding institute.

The Cage Club is the perfect combination between bar and club – a concept new to Cologne’s nightlife on an upscale level. Elegant Art-Deco-elements in combination with designer furniture, mirrors, steel bars and reiterating copper elements are the key components for an atmosphere of party and at the same time cozy privacy. Three floor levels – open yet interlaced – with a special custom made epoxy floor and copper inlays are grouped around a funnel. In its middle the literal DJ cage is hanging – almost like an oversized vintage aviary.

With the DJ in the middle of the club – not in a corner – the motto “give me space, give me wings” becomes reality. Excellent drinks served at two bars – due to the owners expertise in the gastronomy business, they also own “Shepherds” – and a variation of music genres sounding from the DJ cage in combination with the subtle lightning, this venue is the perfect beginning for a long night out.

Berlin, Germany.  This is Mitte with a difference.  The client was very clear from the beginning that he wanted to have a different bar, something that stood out from the rest. Quality, style and atmosphere were key words in the design development.  The end result is a glamorous and lush immersive environment, where one can escape the concrete streets of Berlin to surround themselves in gorgeous materials and something a ‘little bit different’.

LAZY MOON DINNERCLUB

MUNICH

2013 saw NOVONO’s return to the Filmcasino building in the centre of Munich where they once breathed life into the Oyster Bar.  This time to charm the former cinema’s visitors once again with the design of The Lazy Moon dinner club.  The space overcomes the challenge of having a dual existence as both restaurant and club. Lazy Moon’s design concept is a direct reference to its history and former use.  ‘Our design is an invitation to go behind the scenes and enjoy a touch of stardust,’ explains Nora von Nordenskjöld,  Owner and Chief Designer of NOVONO.

A sepia toned colour palette takes visitors back to the silent film era.  A collection of carefully selected antiques plays with the aesthetics of the 1920s.  Reoccurring patterns on fabrics and surfaces engage with the traditional Art Deco mannerism, modernising it through abstract interpretation.  The central element of the old-movie-theater-restaurant is its extra large and moveable bar, above which is a striking cinema marquee.

LAZY MOON IS MUNICH'S FIRST DINNER CLUB, THEATRICALLY LOCATED IN A FORMER CINEMA. HERE THE CLIENTELE CAN IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN A TOUCH OF STARDUST. ANOTHER SPACE WHERE THE LUXURY AND EXTRAVAGANCE OF THE MOVIE WORLD SURROUNDS THEM.

The central theme of the film narrative is worn on the walls; one side the obligatory screen, the other eye-catching hand-made prints on copper plates.  The resulting effect is one of a ‘more-is-more’ cosiness, a feeling of being in a space where new details can always be discovered.

When describing this space,

Nora von Nordenskjöld explains, ‘In addition to designing an actual space, we are concerned primarily with the creation of emotions and intuitive atmosphere.  In the design for Lazy Moon we combine the functional requirements of the new use and an aesthetic that pays tribute to the building. Through this design concept, this landmark building continues to live on in the here and now,  pulsating and writing new stories’.

Located in Munich’s distinguished and historical “Filmcasino,” The Oyster and Champagne bar is gives the former cinema’s foyer a new face and ambience.

Lofty yet comfortable and sumptuous seating arrangements facilitate the space’s metamorphosis, allowing patrons to feel welcome during the daytime, to sip cocktails on a large, stylish terrace directly on Odeansplatz at sun-down, and to continue their stay until after dark, when the space turns into a lively bar.

The setting’s interior reflects a simple but refined menu of small bites as well as a tasteful selection of champagne, coaxing people into a delightful break from their daily activities in the heart of Munich.

Materials and design elements are simple yet strong. Distortion runs through the design concept; wall-panelling and counter-fronts become more visible only after the first impression of the space’s dynamic flooring pattern subsides. This play with perception runs throughout the entirety of the space. In the restroom, black and white block-stripes work in combination with mirror to create a strong optical effect. The bar’s warm and cozy colour palette highlight the centrally positioned oyster vitrine at its heart.

Emphasising cleanliness and freshness, fundamentals of the oyster trade, the design focuses on clean detailing, and materials with smooth surfaces, whose ability to age impart them with even more beauty with excessive use.
